Guide
Ready to try your Chinese keyboard?
Start with a short HSK 1 typing session. No signup is required.
Practice HSK 1 vocabularyWubi is a shape-based Simplified Chinese input method. It takes longer to learn than Pinyin, so a four-week foundation is more realistic than a “master Wubi in seven days” promise.
Use your computer’s Wubi input method while practicing on TypeChinese. The site checks the Chinese text you enter; it does not replace your system IME or provide Wubi codes. Read the Wubi keyboard guide before starting if roots and decomposition are new to you.
Learn the five stroke zones in small groups instead of memorizing a full chart in one sitting. Recall the key before looking it up. Practice simple characters that clearly expose the roots you learned that day.
Goal: locate the most common roots without scanning the whole keyboard.
Practice left-right, top-bottom, enclosing, and crossing structures. Say the structure before entering the code. When you miss a character, identify whether the problem was the root, the order, or the final identification code.
Goal: begin a code correctly for most familiar practice characters.
Use Simplified HSK 1 vocabulary. Enter words with your system Wubi keyboard, repeat difficult words, and focus on consistent accuracy rather than CPM.
Goal: finish short vocabulary sessions without looking up every character.
Move to short Simplified newspaper passages. Alternate an accuracy day with a fluency day. On accuracy days, slow down and correct code errors. On fluency days, use familiar content and reduce pauses.
Goal: maintain about 95% accuracy across a short passage and identify the root families that still slow you down.
Track code lookup pauses, corrections, accuracy, and CPM. Early Wubi progress often appears as fewer lookups before it appears as a higher speed score.
After four weeks, keep a personal list of high-frequency difficult characters and repeat the cycle with harder passages. Compare your weekly median with the Chinese typing speed benchmark, but compare Wubi sessions with other Wubi sessions.
